| Rotunda Fountain |
Our second day in Aix was fairly unremarkable considering it was a Sunday and—turns out—everything is closed on Sundays, even the supermarket! We walked down Cours Mirabeau—this is the Champs d’Elysee of Aix. However, there was a festival going on with booths lining both sides of the street. The street was closed to traffic and teeming with people. We never figured out what the event was. We saw everything from Tango dancers to firemen to dog rescue organizations. Hey, it’s France!
Our apartment is near Cours Mirabeau which ends in a huge roundabout with a large fountain in the middle. The fountain is called the Rotunda fountain. Erected in 1860, it has three statues on the top of it., representing Arts (the statue faces Avignon) , Agriculture (the statue faces Marseille), and Justice (the statue faces Aix- en-Provence). Learn something? You’re welcome!
However, my post involves not beautiful fountains—of which there are so many in Aix. It is the appearance of artistic and unique strange metal sculptures that we didn’t see when we were here two years ago. These sculptures are all large and of various bodies and body parts (and they are all anatomically correct in a European way). They are…odd.
We passed one particularly artistic onerous sculpture (see photo below) and David said, What is that? A butt crack? I replied, No, it looks like lips to me. The crack is horizontal. If it was a butt, the crack would be vertical, right? David kept walkng, then mumbled, Well, it could be someone lying down…Now I want you to know this is typical of the very intellectual type of conversations that my husband and I have often. Scintillating, right? You can thank me later!
We ate lunch in town at at Il Mado (sitting outside in the sunshine) where I finally got my free wifi! Dinner was at a restaurant on the main drag in town that had the words “Irish Pub” on the awning. So we ordered filet mignon, of course! It was delicious, as was dessert.
But remind me that no matter how appealing it sounds, Café au Lait at 9:30 at night isn’t conducive to getting to sleep before midnight. Oh those French! How do they DO it?
