Powering Through It

Condo sunset

It happens every time I go overseas. By day 6, I’m ready to go home. So done with vacation, so willing to pack it up and head back to Seattle on the first plane outta there.

I don’t know what it is. I remember the first time I was in Hawaii—in my 20s—and by day 5 of my week-long trip, I stared out into a deep blue sea and just wanted to crawl back in my own bed. Same thing in India and even in Turkey. We had just visited Ephesus, one of the most powerful experiences I’ve ever had. I returned to our cruise ship and thought, Okay, I can leave now. What is it with me, anyway?
  • I miss my dog.
  • I miss my bed.
  • I miss my son.
  • I miss my friends.
  • I miss work.

Gotcha! Well, I don’t really miss work, but I think I may soon. It’s the way I’m wired. Maybe I moved too much as a child; maybe I’m too attached to my life in Seattle. I would make a lousy wanderer. I need roots, baby!

The key for me is to power through the feeling and get to the other side so I can enjoy my time away from home. That’s what yesterday was about. Between shopping at the open-air market, wandering the streets of Aix and getting lost in its mazes, and having one of the best meals ever at a restaurant called Pasta Cosy, I managed to get back on track.

Well, until Friday came, that is. But that’s a different blog post altogether.
